Chicken pox

This is a viral disease (Varicella—a herpes virus) characterized by a rash that can start anywhere on the body, but usually starts on the chest or face.  Incubation period is 7 to 21 days.

Progression of rash

Flat to raised to blisters to crust.

Rash continues to develop for 4 to 10 days and is accompanied by itching and fever.

The disease is contagious until all scabs are dry—about 7 days

Treatment

Zovirax is an antiviral medicine. It is most effective if started in the first 24 to 48 hours. Call our office for a prescription; at that time, we must know the patient’s weight.

To control the itching

Frequent cool baths with about ½ cup baking soda.  Aveeno or corn starch may also be used.

Give Benadryl if the itching interferes with sleep

For the fever

Tylenol, cool baths, liquids. Do not give aspirin because of the connection between Reyes Syndrome and aspirin.

Preventing infection of the blisters

Trim the fingernails, have the patient wear socks on their hands at night to avoid scratching during sleep. These eruptions usually do not scar unless they become infected, and most pox marks clear up in 6 to 12 months.

Call the office if the sores become infected, the patient cannot sleep despite the use of Benadryl or if they become confused or develop a severe headache, vomiting or stiff neck.
